Punakaiki - Going Hiking

Our journey in Punakaiki didn't end with the Pancake rocks. We checked out the souvenirs and then travelled a little farther up the road to the Truman track. Thanks again to my work friends for the ideas of places to visit over here!

Truman Track

The track was a short 30 minute round trip walk through the some of the rainforest and down to a lovely beach. The vegetation in this part of the island is so beautiful. A lot more rain falls in this region so it's a different kind of green - a lot of trees, palms and ferns. Absolutely gorgeous!

Brian decided he was too tired to make this trek after the last walk, so luckily I had Aaron and Silvia to explore with. Some of the trees were massive, and clearly hundreds of years old. This tree below was pretty cool. It's a tree inside of another tree! And it's even two different species. Silvia is pointing to a doorknob that someone had put in the tree - I guess it looks like a door.

The center tree is a Matai or black pine and the tree growing around the outside of the Matai tree is a Northern Rata. Talk about coexistence!
Somebody let me in! (I love Aaron's pose in the background - not sure if he knew he was in the picture lol)
As we emerged from the forest, we were surrounded by some flax. This stuff is sooo strong! It looks pretty too.

We were also greeted with some spectacular views of the ocean and the beach below. It was cool to emerge at the top of a small cliff. You can see the beach behind us. The water has eroded the cliff behind me into a unique shape.

What a cute couple!
You can climb down the rocks to get to the beach (as you can see from the peeps in the background). I decided to climb down and left my buddies behind. Good thing I wasn't planning to go swimming because it's apparently unsafe...

You can see why beach has eroded away with the continuous water streaming down from up above.
Ha ha - I snuck another pic of Aaron and Silvia waiting for me above :)
It's hard to take a selfie with a normal camera! Managed it here, except the sun was right behind me so the ocean got a little washed out in the reflection...
View from the beach. Paradise.

On the way back, we got to enjoy beautiful foliage again - and some shade. We were quite hot standing out in the sun. What a great afternoon!
I don't know why I couldn't stop walking while taking this picture...would have been less blurry if I had!
